The hunting for ivory resulted in hunters exterminating most of the elephants and other game in the Eastern Cape. That is why only isolated herds remained and the largest of these was found in the Addo region (+/-140 Elephants). The agricultural growth in the region led to conflict with elephants. This is due to the damaged to Citrus crops and competing with farmers’ needs for water. In 1919 Major P.J. Pretorius was tasked to shoot the remaining Addo Elephants. After shooting approximately 114 elephants between 1919 and 1929 his activities generated publicity and sympathy for the elephants. Thus in 1931 the Addo Elephant National Park came into being. About 5 000 ha was proclaimed as the start of the Addo Elephant National Park. Unfortunately that was when only eleven Addo elephants remained.
Today there are more than 700 Elephants, Cape Buffalo, Black Rhino, Lion, Leopard, Hyena, a range of antelope species and the rare Flightless Dung Beetle in the 1,640 km² Addo Elephant National Park. The Addo Elephant Park is South Africa’s 3rd largest National Park and the first ‘Big Seven’ National Park, with inclusion the southern right whale and great white shark, after the park expansion to include offshore islands in the Nelson Mandela Bay.
